Collecting travel reward miles and points is a great way to reduce the cost of your next vacation, but to truly maximize your potential benefits, you need to get informed about some different ways of accumulating travel rewards.

“Most Canadians don’t travel that often, so are unlikely to earn a lot of points and miles through taking flights and nights in hotels,” explains Patrick Sojka, CEO of Rewards Canada. “For the average Canadian, the best way of earning travel points is through credit cards.”

Many credit cards have their own loyalty and reward programs as standard, so be sure to check the terms, conditions and benefits before signing up to ensure they suit your needs.

Holiday travel

Sojka believes that there is a notion held by some point collectors that it’s now too late in the year to redeem points for holiday travel, but this is certainly not the case. Some credit card companies allow you to make travel arrangements with your desired airline or travel maker at any time and then redeem the points earned against the travel costs.

“As soon as the charge goes onto your account, you can redeem points against it,” says Sojka.

For the spontaneous holiday vacationer there’s always the chance of earning some big reward bonuses if you look in the right places. “Some loyalty programs have last-minute redemption options on their websites or offer bonuses at the destinations that are offering a lot of points,” says Sojka.

“You can’t guarantee that they’ll have your desired destination, but there’s always a chance.”

Before setting off on your holiday vacation be sure to check your loyalty plan’s website for any seasonal bonuses or offers. “You’ll find car rental offers, hotel offers and flight offers,” says Sojka. “Being aware of what’s happening online is one of the best ways to earn more points when you’re traveling during the holidays.”
